Dharmendra is that star of the industry who made his place in the cinema without any acquaintance and without any godfather, which the whole world salutes. This faith and dedication of Dharmendra made him a legendry actor today. But there was a time when Dharmendra was just a name of a boy who was born to a farmer in Gurdaspur, Punjab.
Dharmendra has been fond of films since childhood, he used to watch films secretly from his father. Gradually, his mind started getting less attracted towards studies and more towards films. His craze for films is known only from the fact that he watched the 1949 film Dillagi more than 40 times. He used to watch most of Dilip Kumar’s films. He liked watching Dilip Kumar’s films so much that he used to watch his films hiding from his family members. Dharmendra has been a fan of Dilip Kumar since childhood. Seeing Dilip Kumar acting, the same tension started in his mind that he also wants to act in cinema. This is his desire for cinema that brought him to Mumbai.

Dharmendra often used to go to the cinema hall instead of studying in class with the dream of becoming a hero in his mind. Only metric pass Dharmendra, who wanted to make his dreams come true, reached Mumbai without any planning. Neither did he know anyone in Mumbai, nor did he have any relatives, relatives or friends in Mumbai. Just like this, the desire to be like Dilip Kumar brought him to Mumbai. Because he used to think that everything is available in the city of Mumbai, he just has to be patient, and the same thing was pinching Dharmendra somewhere in his mind.
When Dharmendra made fun of
When Dharmendra came to Mumbai, he had neither a place to stay nor money to eat. In such a situation, wherever Dharmendra used to eat food, he would tell him that just be patient, he will pay all the money as soon as the money comes. Dharmendra started making rounds of every film studio in Mumbai. There were constant banging of the studio, but the matter did not work out. Some say go back to your village, some say become a boxer. Seeing Dharmendra’s stature, most of the producers-directors kept taunting him, far from giving him work.
Seeing his long body, everyone advised him to become a boxer and not an actor. Some people even used to say that you cannot be a hero, so do wrestling. But Dharmendra did not give up, he stood in front of his insistence. To meet his expenses, he worked in the garage and used to sleep there. It was becoming difficult for Dharmendra to earn two-time bread while acting, so sometimes he used to work overtime apart from drilling work to earn more money.

Eventually his struggle came to fruition and that golden day came in his life, when he got director Arjun Hingorani’s film ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’. Dharmendra got the job as a hero in the film ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’. Dharmendra’s dream as a hero was fulfilled with this film. After this film, all the avenues of Dharmendra’s life went open. Between 1960 and 1970, Dharmendra did many romantic films.

Dharmendra played many roles in his film career. Whether it is the role of a simple honest hero in the film ‘Sathyakam’, the role of an action hero in the film ‘Sholay’, or the role of a comedian in the film ‘Chupke Chupke’, why not Dharmendra in his film journey? He has also received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the Hindi film industry. Apart from this, Dharmendra has been a member of the 15th Lok Sabha of India. In 2012, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour, by the Government of India.

Dharmendra married twice in his life, his first wife’s name is Prakash Kaur, who has three children, actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and daughter Ajita Deol. It is known to all that both Sunny and Bobby are working as active actors in Bollywood. Whereas Dharmendra’s daughter is living with her family abroad after marriage. Dharmendra’s second marriage is with actress Hema Malini. They have two daughters Isha and Ahana. Even today, Hema Malini affectionately calls Dharmendra a religion.
